Lead Belly version of "In The Pines" is called "Black Girl (Where Did You Sleep Last Night)" or "Black Girl (In The Pines)." He never called it "Where Did You Sleep You Sleep Last Night?". Lastfm should fix that. Technically the tune is a combination of "In The Pines" and "The Longest Train."

It'd be nice if last.fm used his proper name which is Lead Belly and not Leadbelly. Only this site has it as Leadbelly while every other sites and album compilations of his music have it as Lead Belly.

I wonder if he would have as many listeners on this site if Nirvana hadn't covered one of his songs on Unplugged? I like him, but man, I wish he wouldn't do so much "rapping", it's hard for me to understand him, and it distracts me from his strumming technique, which is quite good.

He's not rapping. In about half of his tunes, he sings the same line over and over. That could sound like he's rapping. In the rest of his tunes the lyrics don't rhyme. Lead Belly didn't write the tune "Where Did You Sleep Last Night (or 'In The Pines')," nor was he the first to record it. The tune originates from Appalachian music from sometime in late 19th century. Iirc the first to record the tune was Dock Walsh and Chris Bouchillon in the early 1920s and they called it "In The Pines." Neither have many listeners. Some well known musicians have recorded it too. Lead Belly was already pretty well known prior Nirvana version of the tune. I guess the Nirvana version encouraged some people to checkout to Lead Belly who'd otherwise wouldn't. Probably the same amount of people were encouraged to checkout Joe Crocker because 2Pac and Dr. Dre's "California Love" is Joe Crocker's "Woman to Woman", except the lyrics are different.

Lead Belly was already well known by the time Bob Dylan was born. He was performing on the radio, performed in Europe and worked with other popular musicians at the time like Woody Guthrie. He also had quite a few articles wrote about him by big newspapers/magazines during his life in the late 1930s to mid 1940s. The people who helped popularize him and bring him to a wider audience were the Lomax brothers and perhaps The Weavers. Bob Dylan was influenced by Lead Belly, as many others were, and even covered one of his tunes, but I don't think Bob Dylan helped bring him to a wider audience. So many popular artists and bands back then had covered Lead Belly's renditions of "Negro Balleds/Folk Songs" or songs he wrote by the time Bob Dylan got around to mentioning Lead Belly and recording "Midnight Special."

Well, I would personally have preferred for Lead Belly to be the default name, but at least there's one page now rather than two.

My pick for all time best Blues/Folk singer. He was also a great guitar player with a very distinct style. Listening to his records is damn near a religious experience.

Leadbelly got that name from a lady who owed a whore house & she hit his belly & told him that he has a leadbelly which it came from his real last name Ledbetter & then people started to call him Leadbelly which he had to change his name when he was running from the law which we call it being on the Lam. He also played & tour with Blind Lemon Jefferson which it should've been added in his Bio.

Nice work disregarding the man's own wishes about his own name, Last.fm. LEAD BELLY. Not leadbelly.

It's Lead Belly, not Leadbelly. Vote to change it! [6] @Punching_joe: He spelled it as "Lead Belly" himself, which is also the spelling used on his tombstone and by the Lead Belly Foundation.

I love you Lead Belly. I love you and your music. I love the feeling that stirs inside me when I listen to your songs. Only you and Bob Dylan can do that, although you are on a completely different level. Rest in Peace, Hud.
