Delving deep into her British-Nigerian roots, Simz' bold, politically awakening single elucidates her inner turmoil, ensuring she never shies away from her poetic vulnerability, reminiscent of the album’s predecessor, GREY Area, released back in March 2019.
Simz continues to fight on with her battle to tackle the national government’s corruption and lust for money – no matter if their profits are to the detriment of others – along with the prejudiced calamities a Black woman faces in a time of crisis all around the world. When asked by i-D in April 2021 what she wanted listeners to take away from the light she had shed on the social injustices emphasised in the song, she replied:
"People can take away whatever they feel, I think that’s the beautiful thing about art. It’s open for interpretation and whatever resonates with you the most will stick. So I kinda just like to leave it open, I’ve spoken my truth".
Effortlessly, the song as a whole is driven by a mighty cinematic fanfare and a powerful drum-line, as if it were something no short of a triumphant rally cry with an unwavering message: with unity comes strength, and with strength comes a war we must face if change is ever to be brought about, now more than ever.
