"What Do You Want Me to Say?" is the third track on Emergency & I. An earlier demo version was released in 1998 as a single, backed with the song "Since You Died".

Travis' "scatting" in the middle of the track was originally going to be the sound of record scratches, co-producer Chad Clark's idea. "It was a terrible idea. If I had done that, it would have made it too obvious. Everyone would have been like, Oh, it's a sample! It's like a wiki-wiki-wiki! It would have been corny… It would have ruined the emotional impact and made the listener wonder where it's coming from. Where it is, he's just freaking out and rocking to the beat," said Chad.

It may have been performed live for the first time on February 27, 1999, eight months before the release of Emergency & I.
