Oh, mate! Thank you so much. Sorry, I've been late to see your posts. 'Cause I found my Cowon Plenue 2 PMP back that's been lost and not noticed for years. I noticed that I forgot how enrapturing listening to true Hi-Fi audio, due to online streaming services. So, I went offline and forget about Last.fm for a while :)

Haha! Good old AAFCC. They make me cry tears of joy and sorrow at the same time. And I forgot about that shoutbox reply, needed to go back to refresh myself. :P. Talking of suggestions.. hmm. I have a couple of random ones. The Twilight Sad, a Scottish post-punk/indie rock band. Terribly underrated in my opinion. I recommend their 2019 album, IT WON'T BE LIKE THIS ALL THE TIME. Sounds pretty enchanting and haunting. Then there is Solution .45 . Since you dig Katatonia and Swallow The Sun, you might really enjoy them. They're melodic death metal though, so expect faster tempos than these two gems of a band :D

"true-Katatonia" meaning their death doom era? I love the newer albums these days, but BMD and DODS will always be the crown jewels.

I totally agree with the crown jewels. I consider any pre-Night is the New Day (including it) stuff as "true-Katatonia". Renkse is a vocal genius and Katatonia used to engineer songs around vocal rhythms and Daniel Lljekvist's drumming made it reinforced. Btw, this vocal rhythm idea belonged to Mikael Akerfeldt, not my determination alone. Aside that, Norrman brothers, especially Fredrik Norrman had an important role in overall Katatonia sound which is generally based on Aeolian mode/natural minor scale, the underlying song structure.

Wow! I knew I noticed *something* changed in the blueprint after NITNWD, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it. Never really noticed it was vocal-rhythm related, that makes perfect sense and now that you mention it I can really hear it in some of my favorites. I'm assuming you play? I had no idea what an Aeolian mode was, hah! I noticed you haven't scrobbled Diabolical Masquerade by the way, have you ever checked it out properly?

It's not a unique style to Katatonia though. Renkse knows well what he's doing. After all, he's also a drummer and since he writes the songs he's pretty acquainted with natural patterns and fitting. Do you know what's unique to Katatonia? Jonas played drums for the first three albums and then Daniel joined the band with Last Fair Deal Gone Down and since then Katatonia drums were more fitted to vocals :) I can't say that Jonas has a wide vocal range, insomuch that his range is pretty limited to mid-low. And almost no sustain. He had injured his chords during BMD, maybe thats why. But he charms with his magical timbre by doing brilliantly managed monochromatic attacks and well performed vibratos. I love his genius. And for Daniel, he also used to tune his drums to adjust with this mid-lows. Not too low kicks, not too high snares, rides with and fills through vibratos... Superb harmony. That comprises the unique wall of sound.

I'm a signal/spectral analyst with some (amateur) music background. You got good shot there :) Of course I'm also a fan of Nyström, Diabolical Masquerade. One of my all time favourite guitarists ♥️ I just can't scrobble from my PMP which is my primary device to listen to music.

Hey man, sorry for the fashionably late reply, it's been a crazy few months. I have to say, I really appreciated your analysis! It may be that I think more in terms of "good riffs = i like", but I was blown away by the technicalities you pointed out, haha! Merely reading that made me see those albums differently. I really need to revisit them with that in mind. I completely agree though, "monochromatic attacks" is the PERFECT way to put it. This "spectral analyst" ordeal sounds incredibly interesting, you officially piqued my curiosity. I'd love to hear some more about your field if you have the time.

You might very well be the first person I've met who also likes Diabolical Masquerade. To this day, I'm amazed by what a weird fucking band that is. On paper, it should be terrible - the utter cheesiness and excesiveness of the music, that is - not to mention Blakkheim even had the balls of puting his name in half the songs of the first album, but... Somehow, it all works out, it comes across as utterly authentic, in all its overindulgent glory. I even love that dreadful Celtic Frost tribute track, haha!
