The Gate is a song by Icelandic singer-songwriter Björk, released as the first single from her ninth album on September 15, 2017.

Björk about the song: "‘the gate’ is essentially a love song, but I say ‘love’ in a more transcendent way. vulnicura was about a very personal loss, and I think this new album is about a love that’s even greater. It’s about rediscovering love – but in a spiritual way, for lack of a better word."

The video for the song was released on September 17, 2017, with Nowness. It was directed by Andrew Thomas Huang, who has colaborated with Björk in the past, and directed the videos for Mutual Core, Black Lake, Stonemilker and Family. Huang elaborated to Nowness for the video's online premiere, "“The Gate” picks up where 2015’s Vulnicura left off. It is the first glimpse into Björk’s utopia. The doorway lies within the wound from Vulnicura, which now appears transformed into a prismatic portal channeled between the chests of two lovers. Not lovers in the quotidian romantic sense, but in a broader cosmological way… "The Gate" is a declaration of hope sung by a woman refracted and re-formed into a luminous whole". He went on to describe the experience as the "culmination of my five-year collaboration with Björk"

The dress Björk wears on the single cover and in the video for the song was made by Gucci's Alessandro Michele, and the mask she wears was made by James Merry.
