For me, their art has become more subversive than ever. Obviously, I have a strong aversion to Scott's actions. However, Neurosis isn't just made up of him. I love this band and what it has conveyed to me for many years. Thank you, Neurosis.

I guess not technically, but if they don't ever replace Scott Kelly, then yea they pretty much have. It's been indefinite hiatus for like...5 years now.

I remember the concert in Mexico City as one of the best expierences in my life. I’ts really a shame all the fucked up situation of Scott Kelly, but I really hope that the remaining members continue with the proyect because this band is just amazing.

fuck spotify. Seriously. There are dozens of other options for listening to this music that don't involve Spotify, which has done so so little for artists and their living. This shouldn't be news to anybody.

Exactly. On top of all that, the quality is garbage. Listen to a song on Spotify, then go listen to that same song on Bandcamp, or a flac version of it….night and day. If that’s not enough, you pay to not own music and they dictate what is or not on there. So people pay money to not even get everything they want.

And yet it's by far the most descriptive term for the type of post-metal Neurosis play

listening to neurosis' music can keep people away from doing harm to others, can prevent them from becoming another scott kelly.. a neurosis emerges from repressed needs and feelings, which everyone of us have in our subconsciousness, waiting for their bait. this band still helps me through dark times. a world without neuroses wouldn't need this band. to all those moralists - every single one of you carries some sort of guilt.

Woke hipsters, most likely. Neurosis without Scott Kelly is sad to see. However, his mental health has been spiraling out of control for his whole life and he has to try to heal. Good luck to him, he has a lot of demons to battle.

Congratulations Captain Obvious! You've won. You managed to the spot the thing. Scott Kelly's abuse has nothing to do with enjoying music and buying out. No one cares about virtue signaling. Enjoy the music or don't. The Law of Attraction is absolute and the man will suffer on the wavelength he put the people around him in.

That's a turn of events, I wasn't aware until recently, but I think we all suspected some sort of turmoil. Art is not the artist. All sorts of fucked up people do fantastic, even legendary work constantly. You can harvest the benefits of anything without seeing eye to eye with its maker, and pretty much everyone alive constantly does. My enjoyment of Neurosis was never tied to a "morality background check". What I get out of the music is mine alone, the members of Neurosis as individuals, separate from the Neurosis entity, can't change that.

cool fact about Roeder: every cymbal on his kit is a ride. even the hi-hat is just two rides against each other. he doesn't use any other kind of cymbal.

Havent listened to Neurosis for the good part of a decade. Hearing Scott Kelly leaving made me make a mad dash for what vinyls i could get my hands on. It feels good listening to them again.

Of all the harsh revelations regarding musicians I respected and loved, this is easily the most devastating. God dammit, Scott.

I can think of possible worse endings, like they could all die in a car crash or smth... At least they still have their solo projects, also they didn't say that Neurosis is over yet...

Goddamn, can't like anybody anymore, feels like every month another artist I respect and love turns out to be a piece of shit. Thanks for fucking up your family and ruining one of the greatest bands ever, Scott. Fifteen years of fandom down the fucking drain, can't even listen to their stuff anymore knowing this shit. I guess you'd have to be fucked up to make music like theirs anyway, but I never thought he was the type the beat up his wife and kids. I guess the old adage "never meet your idols" holds true once again.

" Compared to the impact of Scott’s actions on his family, the impact on our band pales in significance. Nevertheless, with the heartbreak and horror we also grieve for the loss of our life’s work and a legacy that was sacred to us." The rest of the band said it best, here, imo, and I think this is how it feels for fans too. This work and legacy meant a lot to so many people. It sucks to have that tarnished now and lose some of its meaning.

Wow, haven't thought that there would be something like that. However, among creative people or even geniuses, it is not rare to see various mental conditions. At the same time, if we omit this matter, he may even struggle with creating new music. I don't know really what's behind, but sometimes it is really terrible to feel, when you can't write new music or even do something about it. It's depressing. Writer's block is a terrible thing. I'm saying about one of the possibilities.

Scott was the frontman of Neurosis since its formation in 1985. I don't see a scenario where this band continues; Scott's very public confession and retirement is bound to introduce drama that will never subside. Every time they release an album or go on tour, all anyone will talk about is this event. The band name is effectively tarnished, permanently

it's such a hard thing for all the fans who have depended on Neurosis emotionally and who have been shaped in no small way by the music. I recall the band Lostprophets. their album "start something" had a huge impact on my as I was growing up, and I relied on them for some emotional support, but then the news broke about Ian and we all had to decide whether or not we could continue to listen to the band. I gave them up but I haven't quite accepted that. I miss the music.

Brainwashed? They're probably just sad to see someone they respected fall to this level. I'm sure some of the might even find it hard to believe, regardless of the straightforward "confession" Kelly posted. I'm sure that's why there were rumors about Sarah in the first place; people just refuse to believe the worst even when it is the truth.

I mean I do feel compassion for those people and understand where they're coming from. But I still think it's very naive and wrong. And while "brainwashed" is a harsh term, I think it's still somewhat accurate. It's a sign that the manipulation is still working on those people. Since Neurosis built their legacy on brotherhood, honesty, integrity, etc. it's going to be tempting to deny that anyone involved would be using those values under false pretenses and for malicious intent. I think it's more mature for fans to hold the artist to the very standards his work preached in the first place.

Sure. I think it'll sink in for everyone eventually. Steve, Noah and the others just posted a statement today - apparently they kicked Scott out in 2019 because he'd been lying to them about the extend of his wrongdoing. They haven't been able to get into contact withi him since. Sanford Parker (who was in 2 Scott Kelly projects) also posted a statement saying he has been unable to get into contact with Scott Kelly since early 2020. Apparently, Sarah Kelly told Sanford about the abuse in early 2021 after she took the kids away. Presumably, Scott has been on his own since early 2021, so luckily, that would mean Sarah and the kids are safe. The statement from the band also implies that what he posted on Facebook is unhinged and delusional - implying Sarah and the kids are long gone. Here's hoping.

yeah I read Neurosis' very refreshing statement shortly after posting that reply, and I'm seeing far wiser statements made by fans there than what I initially saw on Scott's post, making me proud to be part of this fanbase.

Depends on how you define that. If we define post-metal strictly as sludge bands that play post-rock songs, then no, Neurosis doesn't qualify (even though they were instrumental in defining the sound of atmospheric sludge). If we define post-metal as using the sound of metal in a different musical context - similar to how post-punk, post-industrial and post-prog are defined - then Neurosis fits the bill completely. The second definition of post-metal is what's more common nowadays due metalgaze (mostly blackgaze, but Deftones and their ilk show a softer take on metalgaze). It also looks like what was previously known as "avant-garde metal" is retroactively being refered to as post-metal in some instances. So nowadays, post-metal can refer to strictly experimental bands (Neurosis, Kayo Dot, the Norwegian avant-garde scene, the two newest Tool albums), metalgaze bands (Alcest, Deafheaven, Deftones etc.) and atmospheric sludge bands (ISIS, Cult of Luna etc.)

what do u think of lets say Norma-Jean's album Meridional? is that post metal? I just know that that specific album is really great and worth ten times any other Norma Jean album.

To be fair. Post Metal has way more going on for it than post rock. Outside of Godspeed and Swans everything else is just not interesting. Post Metal got Neurosis, Isis, Mouth of the Architect, The Ocean, Cult of Luna, A Storm of Light, Pelican, Old Man Gloom, Battle of Mice, Made Out of Babies and US Christmas. Actions Reply 0votes

yeah putting Neurosis among post-metal doesn't quite work, because post-metal is the name for music that Neurosis influenced, but they predate it. Neurosis themselves don't like being called metal at all (in Von Till's words: "There are no 'chugga-chuggas' in Neurosis") and seem most comfortable with the labels of "psychedelic hard rock" or "psychedelic heavy music".
